The Kuwaiti's were damned smart though - as soon as Saddam declared war they spent about 21 billion dollars on a US public relations company, hiring them to demonise Saddam to the west. This worked very well indeed since the west in general and the US in particular were trying to be good international policeme... errr... citizens and Saddam went from close American ally to evil bogeyman used to scare children and later, as a direct result, to confused and pathetic old man that the US promptly gave to his enemies to execute.
