Actually I've heard different..
Moon Cricket to me is a racial term against Whites.
Native Americans used this term while describing white people who had skin pale as the moon and long Lenky legs like a cricket.

Its a racial term used to insult african americans cotton picking slaves ousted to stay out doors at night singing working songs to lift there sprits especially on moon lot nights hence the term moon crickets
