Agoraphobia is an anxiety disorder which primarily consists of the fear of experiencing a difficult or embarrassing situation from which the sufferer cannot escape.

People with agoraphobia may experience panic attacks in situations where they feel trapped, insecure, out of control, or too far from their personal comfort zone. In severe cases, an agoraphobic may be confined not only to their home, but to one or two rooms, and they may even become bed-bound, or a recluse.

ANYONE HAVE THIS PROBLEM?

The one-year prevalence of agoraphobia is about 5 percent. Agoraphobia occurs about twice as commonly among women as it does in men (Magee et al., 1996[1]). The gender difference may be attributable to social/cultural factors that encourage, or permit, the greater expression of avoidant coping strategies by women (DSM-IV), or dissuade men from seeking help and reporting the onset of agoraphobia.

WHAT ARE SOMETHINGS THAT YOU DO?

Have someone close to you come and assist you whenever you go out of the house. That's the only solution to your problem.

HOW DO YOU LIVE YOUR LIFE?
Well, there are modern conveniences that make someone with Agoraphobia a more comfortable life, such as Internet Shopping. Of course, work and school can now also be done at home through the Internet. Work at home is done by medical transcriptionists.

You might consider online therapy for your agoraphobia. This is a good way of getting the help you need without having to leave home. The mindfulness approach works particularly well for agoraphobia and severe anxiety with panic attacks. Simply search for: "online mindfulness therapy for agoraphobia" to find a good therapist offering mindfulness therapy online.

When I used to see my psych & therapist (CBT) I overcame my fear and felt better than ever. After a year I feel better that I decided to stop going to see my psych & therapist. After six months later my agoraphobia came back and I feel so horrible and homebound again. It always comes and goes and is at its worse when I am in a lot of stress. I am thinking about going to get some help again and do the CBT exercises that I used to do like thinking positive and medicating.

If you have this problem I suggest that you seek help. Your not alone !

Matt's answer does not address how to lessen the root causes of agoraphobia. This is a treatable issue. I have personally treated clients with success who are experiencing symptoms ranging from mild to severe. Contact a psychologist so you can learn how to overcome this problem. It is treatable!
