1. Different: The biggest difference is that in the current war, no nation is our opponent; it is purely an ideology, represented by various non-governmental organizations throughout the world. I noticed this first on 9/11; there was an attack, but no enemy country. (Iran is a nation embodying Islamist ideology, but Iran as a nation is not officially at war with any other nation.)
2. Similar: The Cold War was similar in that it was a war of ideologies. It was Communism (Marxism) vs Capitalism. Now it is Islamism vs. Liberal Democracy.
3. Different: The Cold War resulted from the fact that neither side was willing to risk the casualties inherent in a "Hot" war, in the nuclear age. In the current war, it is clear that the "West" wants to avoid massive casualties, but it is unclear whether the Islamists feel the same way.
4. Different: In fact, the Cold War came in the aftermath of WWII, which resulted in devastation in Europe and the USSR. The world needed a rest from total war. It has now been over 70 years since the world has faced total war on a global scale; few people remember what it was like.
5. Different: During the Cold War, the antagonists took care to be in communication with each other at all times, though of course there were state secrets. Currently, many of the Islamist groups make no effort to be in communication with the West, since secrecy is the essence of their strategy.
6. Similar: In both the Cold War and the current conflict, the enemies of the West are adherents to a strict written ideology; there are differences among them, but they all claim to be the true followers (of Marx or of Islam). The West, in both cases, is not following a single source of wisdom, but rather prefers a kind of practical individualism, permitting liberty at least in so far as it doesn't result in too much harm. Capitalism was named by Marx, but in real life it was just a lot of people figuring out new ways of creating wealth.

Very different. Al Qaeda don't have 'country'. They can be operating anywhere in the world. Islamic extremism is found through out the world. Even in the US may be. There is not going to be clear 'end' to war on terror where as in Cold War the fall of Soviet Union marked the end of this war.

nicely, I even have not been to Iraq yet i replaced right into a protection rigidity medivac pilot in Vietnam. There fairly is not any parallel between the two wars for my section. And we generally say that we lost in Vietnam yet did we actually? The domino concept replaced into the reason we went to conflict in Vietnam. the belief replaced into that if communism took carry in southeast Asia like it did in North Korea that worldwide places could start to fall into Communism for the duration of the pacific rim. Many historians now say, although in hind sight, that our stance in Vietnam dissuaded the U.S. and China from pursuing Communist domination someplace else. Thailand, Laos and Cambodia are examples of world places that are no longer Communist to at present. Vietnam replaced into yet one skirmish in the chilly conflict that we finally gained. i think of it will be seen if our stance against the U.S. expansionist schedule did no longer have a great deal to do with the main suitable failure of international communism. And heck, even Vietnam is transforming into a capitalist u . s . now that they have got considered how nicely this style of gadget of government promises for it fairly is human beings.
