Kim, I will thus assume you do not object to the idea of shared responsibility, as long as it costs you money. That is a facinating way to argue against taxes.

Nicko, I'll assume you are immediately cancelling any insurance you have which is not mandated by law.

This wasn't really a question about insurance but for those of you who think that if government sponsored insurance has to cost more than private insurance, I would suggest you look into Federal flood insurance or as in popular here in PA, State mine subsidence insurance.

In both cases, no private companies will underwrite policies because they cannot make money on it while offering it at a price people could afford. Government offers it because they don't have to make a profit off of it.

What do people think the insurance companies do with their money when they pay their premiums each month? They don't put it in a box and wait for that person to file a claim. They use it to pay other people's insurance claims.

I can't think of a clearer example of "shared responsibility".

Your analogy linking insurance to socialism is about as unfounded as saying the government is guilty of extortion because they use tax dollars to fund the police and military.

You forget one key part that socialism lacks: free markets and competition. Oh and one MAJOR part that is paramount in ALL socialist agenda: bureaucracy.

I personally have no problem with "shared responsibility." I feel it is every person's duty on this planet to be of service and help someone else. However, this only works when it is a CHOICE!!! Not mandated by some "holier than thou" politician. The welfare state has GOT to go, and be replaced with private charity. Meaning you no longer get to go stand in an endless sea of people and get your guaranteed check when you decide you don't want to work anymore and quit your job. Your fiscally irresponsible behavior will no longer be rewarded when you have another child so you can get a bigger check on the 1st and 15th.

I don't want to pay higher taxes for YOUR kids to have health insurance when I can barely afford health insurance for MYSELF! I don't want to pay higher taxes so you can go get food stamps to feed your kids ramen noodles while you eat steak and lobster when it's a stretch for me to take myself out to eat once a MONTH! I don't want to pay higher taxes because you mismanaged your funds and made a poor decision to buy a home through a financial institution that has specialized in giving loans to people with bad credit (sub-prime lenders)! I don't want to pay higher taxes because you didn't have the foresight to board up your windows and fortify your home when you heard news a hurricane was on its way!

Bottom line: I don't want to pay higher taxes. The money I make isn't a lot, but what little I have should be mine to loan, give, or spend on whatever I want. I should decide whether I would like to be greedy or generous. That is the nature of freedom!

just who are these "cons" I read so much about? neo-con, repukes, libtards, dummycrats.... really whats the point.

If you prefer a socialist society, by all means move to Canada. The USSR is always looking for good little submissive. I am going to assume you are not American, because that is the only reasonable deduction to explain your ignorance on what capitalism is. Just to clarify, The USA is a capitalistic society. We are not afraid, we the people well at least most, believe in personal growth and success. The big bad world doesn't owe you or me a darn thing. so in the immortal words of the rock band the Eagles "GET OVER IT!". Thank you, and have a nice day.

Insurance isn't 'shared' responsibility. Insurance is about making profits for the company and for the shareholders at the expense of the people who need the insurance. Health insurance should is about life and death just like having a police department, security and the fire department. Those departments are paid for by taxes and do very well by our communities. Health care is life and death also and should be paid for by our taxes. Otherwise the interests of the people are at odds with the profits of the shareholders of the insurance corporations. Profits or quality health care. That's what it comes down to.

You liberals keep thinking of new ways to mask your intentions because when people realize what you mean they know better than to fall for your liberal tricks. Universal slavery to the government would be a more honest way to describe what you call shared responsibility.

I will say this that the people who dreamed up insurance had the greatest scam on the people in the entire passing of time since the beginning of time.

That would be great if everyone shared responsiblity for things, but not everyone is willing to do so. Some people just expect you to give them something and most of the time they want it now. Many of the people think the are the most important person in the world and don't care about anyone else. People don't want to work, but will happily take from anyone.

There is nothing wrong with shared responsibility provided that you took on that responsibility willingly. If I decide of my own free will to enter into a partnership in which we will invest our money together and use the proceeds to cover medical expenses, then I have chosen to live by the contract that I agreed to sign.

If on the other hand I am forced to bear your burden against my will because you lack the character to care for yourself then it is called slavery.

"Shared responsibility" doesn't make for socialism...FORCED shared responsibility does.

I can choose whether or not to buy private health insurance, voluntarily pooling my risks with others. I can choose to start a family, voluntarily giving up most of what I earn to support my children. I don't have a problem with either of these concepts.

I have NO choice when it comes to funding social programs or supporting the public schools. The state forces me to participate at the point of the tax collector's gun...that's what I object to.

Insurance has nothing to do with shared responsibility, it has to do with playing the odds. If you want to share your responsibility for raising your children, then have at it.
