They only argument one ever hears about why psychics don't win the lottery (besides the obvious "because all psychics are frauds") is that, Oh, they're supposed to use their gift for a higher purpose and not for personal gain.

I can't think of a higher purpose than winning a 100 million dollar jackpot and donating it to charity. Can you?

I'm guessing I'm going to get a bunch of people stating the obvious (i.e., all psychics are frauds), and that's fine...I just wanted to see if anybody had an alternate answer...

Julia D - actually, I disagree with you about the charity thing. There are plenty of reputable charities out there, including many where most of the money they receive goes to to a good cause. Check out charitynavigator.com; you can research charities there; they've got nifty little pie charts showing how each charity spends its money, etc. etc.

Also, I'm not saying that psychics (were there such a thing) should use their "gift" for a higher purpose (and even though there is no such thing as a psychic, most try to make money off of being psychic anyway). That's just their excuse for not winning the lottery.

Lilu - well, saying that they get their "stuff" from demons implies that there is something that they actually "get"...information not by means of any of the five senses. etc. etc. Since they aren't actually able to do this when tested under controlled conditions, I'd have to discount the demon theory.

aphrodity... - Thanks for the tip; I'll look int Houdini. I'm actually a big fan of James Randi myself, and I can't STAND that wench Sylvia Browne. I have a friend that reads all her books; she made me read one once, and it just deepened my loathing...

Psychics aren't actually psychic. Most are frauds who deliberately take advantage of others, while some probably believe that they are endowed with special powers. Both fail to hold up to scientific scrutiny.

If you're interested in the history of defrauding psychic mediums, check out the biography of Harry Houdini. He's a classic magician and stage performer who could see through many of the common tricks of 20th century spiritualism.

P.S. To the funny lady above: If psychic Sylvia Browne could win the lottery, wouldn't it be better than charging bereaved families 750$ for a session to talk to their dead relatives? It's a scam, and no amount of emotion will change that.

I can think of a higher purpose than winning 100 million dollars and donating it to charity. Charities are a rip-off, corrupt to the bone, and very little of the money that gets sent to them (even the Red Cross and major charities like that) gets to people who really need it.

A better thing to do with 100 million would be for the person who won the money to go to areas where people need the most help, and see to it personally that they get houses built for them, food planted for them, medical care given, education given, clothing, etc. by hiring workers/doctors/teachers to do that and then supervising them to make sure it gets done right and everyone gets what they need.

And who said that psychics are supposed to use their gifts for a "higher purpose" anyway? Do gifted piano players give concerts for free? Do gifted artists give away their paintings for free? Do gifted musicians give away their music for free? All of those are at least as powerful and God-given as any psychic ability is, and yet psychics are supposed to give away their talent for free?

Nope, it doesn't work like that, and anyone who thinks it should, should make sure that whatever talent THEY were born with, they should also give away for free, all the time, every time.

Everyone has a talent they are born with, divine gift, whatever anyone wants to call it. Everyone. So everyone should give the works of their talents away for free then, if psychics should.
