I want to know when my hamster dies. I might bury him in the ground but that's sorta of sad thinking about it. I was wanting to know does anybody/can anybody taxidermy hamsters/small animals?

I have a friend who worked at a science museum, and they stuffed all sorts of animals for displays and stuff. If there is one near you you might want to inquire with some of the staff.

Another suggestion is to check on Craigslist for your area - there are all kinds of services offered or you could post what you need done there.

Good luck!

It's possible to do it yourself. In the university where I once taugh, students did taxidermy mounts and study skins for their mammology and ornithology classes. I did a quick seach and found these instructions on the web: http://www.fecalface.com/SF/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=230

Rather than cutting down the back, the students did the cut up the stomach. You can decide where to do it based on the position you want the hamser displayed. If he's sitting up and the back is toward the wall, do it in the back. If it's on all fours, (like he's running on his exercise wheel) do the cut on the stomach. Wherever the cut is, it will probably be noticeable, so put it in the least obvious place.

A newer method is to freeze-dry animals, so there are no cuts with this method. Private taxidermists do this with fish, and some colleges and universities have the equipment, but you'd have to check on prices and availability in your area.

Look in the yellow pages for a taxidermist. I'm sure there is one somewhere in your area. Deer hunters always want to mount the heads on their walls, so they gotta go somewhere. I'm sure you love your hamster, but taxidermy is expensive. You'll probably pay at least $100 to have your hamster mounted. That's a lot of money for a $5 hamster.
