Before my grandma died (she had cancer, so she knew her time was ending) she told me that she needed me to know one thing ....
"Your dad is not your dad"
I have asked family members, and the only person to agree is my aunt.

Well my grandma has gone, and my aunt refuses to talk. But ..... I did ask my mom and dad, and was told to leave well enough alone.

Now here we are 10 years later, my parents have disowned me and have told my kids that my aunt is really my mom. When I confront I am told it was said in anger.

My grandpa just died a few weeks ago, and now my cousin is being told that she was actually raised by my grandparents because she was an illegetimate lovechild of my grandpa and aunt.

When we have researched, we have found out that infact my aunt, her mom, (or so we have been told) was a drug addict, and my grandpa was a bootlegger. (for thse who don't know ... a drug dealer of his day)

How do we find the truth and how do we know who to believe?

Have either one of you looked at birth certificates? Gone to the courthouse and asked to see birth records of that year? I hate to read about deathbed confessions because they are always so hard on the people left behind. From the way I read it, you are your cousin's sister and the daughter of your grandfather. If you and your cousin have a good relationship, cherish her as your sister; hang onto what you have over what you don't know.

I would try to ask someone from outside your family who would have an impartial knowledge, perhaps old neighbors or something... but I'm not sure if it is really all that important when it comes down to it... Many successful people have grown-up thinking that someone was their parent and it turns out it is someone else entirely, usually a relative... Eric Clapton and Jack Nicholson are two examples... I wish I could be more helpful, but it is not my area of expertise... I just wish you the best of luck and peace of mind.
