I've used both manual and electric pumps, and the electric was WAAAAYYY better. If you don't want to spend oodles of cash - look on EBay - I bought my 2nd pump on there for less than half of what it would have cost me at Wal-Mart.
For speed, efficiency and ease of use - electric wins every time. (Plus, it's easier on your hands, and you can change out bottles while the machine is still pumping - you can't do that with a manual. I've tried!)
I personally loved the Medela Mini-Electric pump, but I know that loads of my girlfriends loved the Medela Pump-In-Style.
Good luck!

It depends on how much you are going to pump. If you are a stay at home mom you probably would be just fine with a manual pump. If you will need to pump often, an double electric pump is definitely worth the extra money. I didn't want to spend a lot of money so I bought a used pump from ebay and bought the tubes, and other parts (called a hygienikit for $40) brand new.
I bought the Ameda Purely Yours pump and it is awesome. My friend had let me borrow her Medela Pump in Style before I bought my Ameda pump and it wasn't near as good. I love my Ameda because it is the only "closed system" which means you can buy it used and not have to worry about contamination. Any other pump, the milk can get through the tubes, The Ameda also has awesome suction which helps get the job done more quickly and efficiently. You can probably buy one from ebay for around $30-$45 and a new hygienikit for $40. This $ is well worth it and it will last you through several kids.

Medela is the way to go. As for cost, check your insurance, most (including medicaid) will buy you a pump for medical reasons. Have your doctor write a prescription right after you give birth, have him list the reason as "to increase milk supply" unless there is another medical reason. Even with the double-electric hospital-grade pump, I was never able to get much. Nursing by the baby is much more efficient. Without the electric pump, I would never have had any to keep in the freezer in an emergency. Good luck.

The electric are the best and the most expensive....worth it, only if you are going back to work and need to pump on a regular basis. The Medala is the best I used, and you can use it as manual if you want. You can also try renting them from your local lactation consultant office or la leche league.

I couldn't pump at all! I had a manual and it really didnt' work. I could do slightly better by just squeezing. I don't recommend them at all unless you go electric. This time I am not getting one. I am just going to squeeze it out because last time, it was a waste of my money and the eletric are so expensive, I am not going to bother this time
