SLi implimentation doesn't translate to exactly 2x performance. Its much lesser than 2x. But one thing that is really 2x is the power consumption.

2x power consumption for a less than 2x performance, i don't think its a good choice. not for me.

A single more powerful card is always better option. SLi is better when a single high end card isn't enough for you, then you go SLi to be faster than the fastest card can go.

I am assuming you are saying 2x as in running the cards in SLI. If that is the case I would say that the two 8600's would be a better suit than a single 8800 GTS.

This is coming from a guy who has an 8800 GTS running right now and loves it.

The NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 256 MB graphics card is better. I have it and it works excellently. If you by it at Fry's you will get a free game. ( NO DEMO)

The 8800 GTS because it has a higher band width.
8600GT SLI may waste electricity and doesn't help much at all unless 8800GTS 320MB SLI together and they'll achieve 8800GTX performance.
