"We need 4-5 articles every six weeks, about 350-400 words each with photos, if necessary, and captions." Would $400 per article be too much? I really need to hear from professionals. Thanks!!

way too much. i'm assuming this is a small publication, and not a prestigious one, based on the fact that you're asking such a question here.

well-known publications who can attract top notch talent usually don't pay any more than a $1/word, and that's what you're offering at $400 for a 350-400 word article.

these type of articles generally fall under the category of "fillers," even at large publications, and usually don't command more than $150-200. of course, with well known writers these prices can rise greatly.

hope that helps.

I am not a journalist, but I would think that it would depend on many factors. Am I doing all the research? What type of articles? What form of media will it be published in? Am I taking the photos? Are the topics given to me or do I come up with my own topics? I mean you are talking about approx. $2000 every six weeks. If this is all the person does it would only be about $17,000 per year. How much prep work would it take the writer to compile the story?

It probably depends on your budget -- the standard answer is "as little as possible."

You get what you pay for, of course, but $50-$75 for that short an article is probably fair. The photos are another story -- tack on another $10 to $25 each, assuming you'd only use one or two.

Are you serious!!!! Are you talking of USD $400? I worked six years as a journalist at the most important newspaper in the city where I live (in Mexico) and that was my salary for one month! I would be glad to work for you if you accept someone in Northern Mexico, What do you think?
