There is no secret. Happiness is a choice. Ultimate happiness is to enjoy life even when you are sick, broke, and food is limited. Or you have food, money, and health. Whatever you choose to do in life, it needs to show your happiness. Happiness is a continue state of being and not a minute or so of enjoyment.

An understanding that secrets are questions or answers I could have told knowingly within the time I had on this earth but did not. To keep a secret is to lie so I do my best to shed myself ot them. But a person must ask me the right question to get the right answer. To your question I would also say the secret for true happienss is humility and love. Learn how to love and be humble is hard because you really have to mean it and sometimes you dont untill your at your lowest point. But dont actively force yourself into a low point because that will only mean more work to find them. Instead aim for a high point and then if you fail you will get a taste.

"The secret of life is a good cup of coffee
The secret of life is keep your eye on the ball...
The secret of life is in monday night football
Rolling stones records and moms apple pie"

The secret is just live your life...happiness is not a goal but an attitude we can surround ourself with along the way.

Apart from a good relationship with God, I would say the following:

1. A healthy recognition of one's pain (emotional and otherwise), and having learned how to forgive.
2. A loving, caring relationship with at least one or two other people.
3. A healthy self-esteem: neither overdone, nor overly low.
4. Keeping "short accounts" with God, with others, and with yourself. That means not waiting overly long to deal with difficulties in relationships.
5. Making the decision to be satisfied with not having more "things" or money than the average person.
6. Being generous, even when it hurts.
7. Being willing to live with some unhappiness in your life.

The secret is to know that there is no such thing as true happinessl Happiness comes and goes. We need to enjoy it when we can. And working on keeping it around. Nurish it, want it, make plans for it..

I love what sammyloo1 said. Happiness, like any emotion or mood, is always our own choice. We make decisions every moment and choose our response to others, so it becomes clear we must take "response ability" for our own choice of emotions, moods and actions. Statements like, " you make me so angry, or, "you hurt my feelings," makes no sense any more. Before I could experience true happiness, I had to get rid of ALL my left over guilt and shame and blame, (which many of us were raised on) and I had to trust I was EQUALLY worthy and deserving of pure, unfiltered joy. With guilt gone, I could let go of resentments towards others. The hope of me evolving toward feeling no hate for anyone made me very happy! Also by trying to practice non-judgment of others and non judgment of myself, I started to accept people, I mean really accept people with all their weaknesses. I became an observer instead of a critic, and I'll keep on trying to respond to the world with love instead of blame. It is so much more fun!
When you act from love there are no wrong actions! This idea makes me very happy!
