I realize the war is difficult and frustrating - but making such a statement when our soldiers are on the front lines and in harms way seems like a pretty unprofessional, dangerous and utterly stupid thing to do.
Bad enough congress turns the funding of the war into a political circus and expounds policies of defeat, immediate withdrawal and, at best, set time tables for withdrawal.
But this statement from one of our esteemed representatives really takes the cake.
What are your serious thoughts on this - and, please, accept this question in the present, and don't recite reasons we shouldn't have done this or that in the past.
This is not a liberal or conservative question - it is a question concerning the inevitable results and consequences of such a callous statement coming from one of our representatives.
Any truth in this statement is irrelavent - there are numerous other avenues to advocate the position without telling the enemy the United States has lost the war.

Quint - You should be a politician - I agree with all of your contentions, but unless you think telling the enemy we've lost is a credible way to get the troops home, you haven't answered the question.
Sageandschola - Of course they know - that's not the point, or the question. Do they really need to hear it from one of our representatives?
I totally agree with your added "most disturbing" observation.

Harry Read should never have said such a thing. At the time, I remember thinking, first, of what effect that kind of thing was going to have on the morale of our troops. You can be against the war without demoralizing our troops or giving the enemy reason to celebrate.

First... Kim, you're an idiot. No one, left or right, cheers soldier's deaths. While I realize you're just a troll, your suggestion is childish.

Next, you have to take the full quote in context.

"Now I believe, myself, that the secretary of state, the secretary of defense and you have to make your own decision as to what the president knows: that this war is lost, that the surge is not accomplishing anything."

He further added that Bush's direction for the war was a losing one. That we need a change in the way the war is ran and managed. I agree, and I think the troops agree. So which caused more of a disservice to the troop; Reid saying what he said, or the right wing on 4 words from his statement, making it seem like that's all he said?

LeAnne - do you really think the enemy do not know what is going on there unless we tell them???????
Stop doing this pathetic support the troops cr@p.
Were Hannity and Tancredo supporting the troops when they stated that Clinton's successful attempt to stop genocide in the Balkans was doomed for failure before it started?

Isn't the best way to support the troops to make sure that you are doing everything possible to get them out of a failing situation so that not a single additional soldier dies needlessly?

I find the whole idea of supporting the troops by blindly following the flawed planning and leadership of a person who wants to put more troops in to a failing situation the greatest irony of all. I support every troop - so bring them home!
