Very interesting observation that I never really thought about. So, I will respond in the best way that I can as a 45 yo woman of 1 child and 1 stepchild. Everyone always said to me that until I had a child of my own, that I would never understand what it was like to be a mother. I had a sweet step-son who seemed as if my own-even looked like me and I truly thought that everyone who claimed it wasn't the same as having your own was wrong....until I became pregnant with my daughter. At 6 weeks, there was a heartbeat that I could hear, and the story/saga goes on. With a high risk/later in life pregnancy, I had 13 ultrasounds and got to "see" firsthand what this "mass of cells", or "fetus" was all about. My high risk problem should not have even produced a baby, let alone a full term baby. From the moment of hearing the heartbeat-the time when early abortions occur to each month thereafter, I got to know this person growing inside of me. With that said, life truly doesn't begin outside of the womb....I don't care what anyone claims....if they have had a child, if they have aborted a child, deep down, a woman knows, regardless of their stance on the issue. Anyone-candidate or anyone else that can go beyond the rhetoric, the arguments of pro-choice, or pro-life and truly fight for an innocent life-unborn that it may be-would truly and for sure do the ethically, smart, and logically, "right" thing in the "most important" issues. Too many candidates lack a backbone, cater to the masses, water down their true beliefs, or-worse yet, are so worried about the polls that they can't stand up for what they deep down believe in. A perfect example is our existing president. Sure, I hate war, and lives killed. But,at the same time I value that he made a decision for our country that most of us at the time believed was right. Now to appease voters many other Republicans are jumping ship, democrats changing their stance etc. But the same thing remains-a promise, safety and security being the main concern for our country. Keeping something like a 9-11 from happening again. Now-doesn't abortion take away that same idea of safety and security?
As far as the 2 most important issues? I think they all fall under the category of safety and security. Abortion-security of the unborn, securing our borders-safety for the citizens, support for our military, going back to what made this country great and what it was years ago.....and perhaps my own idea? a 1 way plane ticket provided at the govt's expense to anyone who doesn't like the way this country is run, elevates other countries' leaders, bashes our government whether it was the Clinton or Bush admin, and make the stipulation that if they are so disgusted with the U.S. that they accept this generous offer to move elsewhere and then never come back-nor are they allowed back.
Now, wouldn't that solve so many of the problems?!

I'm a woman and I could really care less about a candidates view on abortion. I care more about, as you said, militaristic operations. That's really what I'm going to base my vote on next year... Whoever has the best strategy with the war in Iraq will get my vote. That being said, I'm voting for John McCain and not Hilary Clinton, like most other women will be voting for. I honestly don't think America is ready for a female president, and I don't think that she is a good candidate.

You're generalizing a bit, but it is definitely a very important issue for women. If a candidate doesn't acknowledge that a woman's bodily autonomy is more important than a clump of undifferentiated cells, I can't trust him or her to acknowledge that women are full humans in our own right, with the same rights and privileges as any other (read: male) citizen. If s/he doesn't believe I have the right to control my own body, s/he doesn't respect me as a human being.
And then there's the fact that making abortion illegal kills women. So.

As a woman, I'm not a one-issue voter. But abortion is important because it deals with the fundamental issues of privacy, choice, autonomy, and dignity/respect.
Yes, I believe abortion is wrong but I don't believe it's the gov't place to infringe on her right to make choices regarding her body...
In the interest of public policy and equity, I believe in informed consent laws and laws regarding fathers' rights.

My guess would be it is due to a woman's natural nurturing instincts and the uncontrollable urge to protect children. I am always interested in a candidates views on abortion, it is A factor but not necessarily THE deciding factor. I think at this point in history, immigration and National security are extremely important.

Abortion is a big deal because women want all options. Also, the discussion is never mentioned, but there's a lot of women (particularly women) who see that if a candidate will support state-paid abortions (the kind they're often talking about without mentioning it), that candidate will probably give them all kinds of other peoples' money for other things, too.
It's a litmus test to see if the candidate is a socialist. Democracies breed socialism, where majorities take the money from minorities, through government. (Don't believe me? Who among you isn't supporting some kind of "tax the rich!" program?)

Because they don't want to stop having sex with who ever
they want, it is just easier to have an abortion and add
one more to the 50,000,000 that have been aborted in
the US since Roe vs Wade
The argument that illegal abortion kills women is an easy
argument to answer, it was their choice to commit an
illegal act. Pretty much the same answer as saying that
robbing a bank kills men

Because pregnancy is a major part of a woman's life ... as is giving birth ... it's a right that we have and men don't and it is important to us ... but I see other issues important too
