I always find it interesting when people are named after American Indians or given tribal names as their given names, especially when they are not of that heritage. As a Shoshone-Paiute person I found it really interesting and somewhat strange when I met a person named Shoshone who was not Shoshone. Its equivalent to naming your child "Polish" or "Guatamalan." Baby name books give "Native American names" but never reference the actual tribal language the word comes from (and there are hundreds of tribal languages indigenous to the US). If you are of American Indian heritage, my suggestion is to find a word from the specific tribe from which you descend.

My husband and I are planning on calling our daughter Sierra whenever she comes around... Hopefully it will be this girl :)

Winona, Dakota, Tula, and Savannah are other choices...

if you go to www.babynamesworld.com they actually have a search engine where you can seperate names out by origin and whatnot :)
