the inscription on it says
"Erised stra ehru oyt ube cafru oyt on wohsi"
which backwords reads
"i show not your face but your hearts desire"
did anyone else notice this??

Well no, I did not actually realize it myself but I think it is there in those HP sites like Mugglenet, where they seem to know everything about the Harry Potter universe.
The key to the inscription is in the name of the mirror itself.
"Erised" spelled backwards is "desire".

Quirrel/Voldemort may have eventually found a way, but we really don't know. That is a good question, though. I would say that he had to go because he wanted to face the person that murdered his parents. He wanted his chance to stand up to him. Plus, Harry has a hero complex. He always wants to be the hero. Not that that is a bad thing. Plus, if he didn't go, what kind of story would that be?
