Maybe something like a savings bond, she won't appreciate it now, but will later. (Although, do one year olds really appreciate any gift they get :))
Books are always nice too.

Something that is personally made by you would be great.
Can you knit, sew? Any item....
maybe a knitted blanket, or sewn one. Handmade items of clothes. Handmade doll either knitted or sewn. No matter how indulgent the parents are people always love that handmade touch.
Another suggestion would be to organise & pay for her 1st birthday portrait. This is always a very important milestone portrait & one the toddler would always have. The parents would love it in the years ahead.
A child at 1 year doesn't have any idea of birthdays. Another good present is a red ball. Red catches the childs attention & it's good play. Just depends on what you want to spend.
Get a lovely birthday card & make the promise in it - just give the card to the mum. Then you will have to follow up on the promise, of course.

Well my son is always playing with my cell phone and/or the TV remote. They have baby phones and remotes that make a lot of noise when the buttons are pushed. I thought that was the best gift my son got on his first birthday. Another really good idea was one of his uncles started him a savings account. One of those ones the child can't get into until they are 18. He told us that instead of gifts every birthday and Christmas he was going to put 50 dollars in the savings account. My son is only a year old and already has 100 dollars in the bank. That's more than I have!

My son gets spoiled by other people but I wanted to get him something special for his first birthday that he could always keep. I got him a metal jack in the box. It's just a classic and we can always remember that as his first birthday gift. I figure he will either take it with him or I can keep it at home beside a picture of him when he's 1.

Hi, how about personalized books? Kids love to hear their own name in the storyline. Go to this website http://www.tlc-expressions.com They have lots of titles like Sesame Street, Ballerina Princess, Little Mermaid, Beauty & the Beast, Teddy Bear Land, Sports titles and so many more. Check it out - they're very reasonably priced, and make a wonderful, unique & special gift... It's something they can enjoy now and keep forever!! Good Luck!

You have a lot of answers, I'm not sure if its been said, but I started collecting the precious moments circus figurines for my niece and she loves them. They are a train when they are all done, and they go all the way from 0-16. I think I heard that they might be adding more too. Who knows, but they are really cute. Good luck!

I have two girls, and I have always loved collectable dolls. So now I buy them collectable dolls. There are several Precious Moments collectables. Those are some of my favorite. This way every time you get her a present, you can add to the collection. This would be the special collection from you to her, that she would always have. And one day, be worth something. And she could pass it on to her kids.

i love giving books as presents. if she has everything,a book is good becasue you can always get ones she doesn't have and she can't ahve too many books anyway. and they are incredibly wonderufl gifts for kids to have. go to your favorite bookstore and look through the kids books. do you have ones you remember liking as a kid? or ones you and her mother (or dad) shared as kids that would be especially meaningful? there are lots of board books to choose from that she could "read" to herself or you could get a hardcover that could be read to her. there are classics ("Make Way for Ducklings," Where the Wild Things Are," Peter Rabbit, Winnie the Pooh) or pop-up books or books about something she particularly likes -- dogs? cats? certain foods? -- or summer time things. As you can tell, I love books.
You can't go wrong.

You can get personalised silver gifts (google them though as i'm in the UK and am not sure about shops and chains you have in the US that'll have these!)
You can get little personalised silver knife fork and spoon sets, for my friends' little boys first birthday, I got him a silver piggy bank with his name on with some silver coins in. He loved it as not only was it cute but it was also rattly and he could make a noise with it for a while.
Just a thought...
