Yes they can since a lot of them eat underwater, they have a protective membrane to stop themselves from drowning.

Yes they can. I own an American Alligator (3 yrs old now) and he does it all the time. As previously mentioned, they can and will do it when trying to feed or as a defensive manuever. He also slightly opens his mouth when hes drinking under water.

I think the answer you are looking for it yes BUT they use their tongue to cover their throat, that is why when you are getting attacked by an alligator underwater you put your hang in their mouth and push the tongue down, drowning him :]

Yes they can, some catch fish to eat them, others drag larger prwy ubnder the water to eat them, or at least drag them into the water.
