Okay, so I have been going to summer school for two days now. I have no friends in my class and no one to talk to during break. There a few other kids that also have no one to hang out with and they look interesting to talk to. How can I "break the ice" and talk, maybe even become friends with them? I don't want to look like an idiot, of course...

Ask them this:

'which is the way to ?'

or if you have seen that person in some activities (basketball, art club, etc) that you're interested in.

'hey, are you from ?'

that's the way to break the ice.

You've just gotta strike up a conversation. Honestly, what do you have to lose? I had this same problem.. I'm in driver's ed class and during breaks i don't know ANYBODY. Just sorta walk up and say "so i can't wait to get outa here! What are you doing after this?" After they tell you what they're doing, tell them what you're doing and just go from there. Talk about the teachers in summer school, what you'll be doing the rest of the summer, ect. Most likely you'll end up talking with them every break and make friends. Sicne you said there's some loners, the'yre probably thinking the same thing. "I wanna find someone to talk to!" So just strike up the conversation, be confident, and you should be good to go!

Easy. You take the initiative and go over to one of the ones you would like to get to know and introduce yourself. Sure, there is a chance of rejection, but who knows, you could make some lifelong friends, too. It is worth a little momentary awkwardness to get to know someone better. Or sit beside them in class. There is almost always a way to interject something into a conversation they may be having with someone else. Just take it slow, don't be rudely interrupting them, then add to the conversation as opportunity allows. Good luck.

You all are there together trying to catch up on some school work that was missed during regular school, that is a fact, so begin with that. Walk up to them and say Hi, my name is and what you like to do, or ask them what their name is and what they like to do. Each of us has a story to tell and when we tell it in bits and pieces to others they and us become closer, sometimes this leads to a lasting friendship.

You might already know their first name, if so you might want to ask them where they live. They could be your neighbor and you not know it.

Today most families have someone deployed overseas, this could also be an ice breaker.

Walk up to them, say hi and start a conversation.About school or whatever.
You won't look like an idiot at all.Don't stand back and wait for them to come to you.You make the first move. It's easy once you do that and you'll have some new friends.
Good Luck.

For starters, your only an idiot if you say something then pause and expect them to think of you like an idiot. You will find that the popular people are bigger idiots then you, the only difference is they know how to handle themselfs when they say something stupid.

So basicly learn to roll with the punches, and remember regardless of what embarresing situations you may encounter you can always recover from them.

Just be confident and pretend like you have known them for a long time. I do this a lot. Nobody likes the 'getting to know you' kind of thing. Just talk about dumb stuff off of the top of your head, like, "you ever use yahoo answers? Its pretty cool."

Sometimes you'll have to keep the conversation going by yourself for a while until they get comfortable with you. Once they are comfortable with you, they'll talk your ear off!

i like to ask questions about a common subject, like the classes your taking for instance. maybe something like what do you think of the teacher or ask a question about the answer. you could also just go ever to them and ask hows it going and introduce yourself.
