Wow, you REALLY haven't been doing your homework, have you?

It was put in place to create a more level playing field so that minorities, which might have otherwise been discriminated against, would have the opportunity to go to college and get good jobs.

To compensate for the advantages that white males traditionally enjoyed in college admissions, and employment opportunities, and give women and minorities equal opportunities.
However once barriers for women were removed in college admissions, preferences for white males were re-instituted because white male enrollment rates declined. They could not successfully compete with women based on merit and most schools want to keep equal numbers of men and women. Today affirmative action is used to maintain racial and gender balance in colleges.
