Yes she is still a mom and she always will be. Just because the life she gave did not get to stay in this world does not make her any less of a mom. She has experienced something that only a woman, a mother can ever experience. She has loved and will always love the child as if it was still here. Just because they are separated in life doesn't mean they are separated in love. Please send her my sincerest sympathy and let her know that she is in my prayers.

Sorry to contradict all the sweet sentiments here, but I'd personally try to help someone in that situation by helping them deal with the reality, and not try to mask it by telling her she is (or was) a "mommy." There's no question that while someone who goes through a miscarriage (which is what this is) will have feelings about who their baby might have grown up to be under other circumstances, the unfortunate reality is the same. Why would anyone want a woman in that situation to wallow in despair? Why should she go through life comparing herself to other women who actually are lucky enough to raise healthy children? Encourage her to try again to become a mother. Only then will she truely understand motherhood, rather than go through life feeling the loss.

Yes she is a mom now and forever. I can't even imagine what it feels like to lose your baby. My baby is sleeping in her crib right now and I just can't imagine my life without her. Its good that your friend has someone like you in her life.

well if you have a kid - IMO you're a mommy. take your example 20 years later. you have one kid, that kid dies in a car accident...are you a mommy? IMO yes. you carried, gave birth to, and loved your child regardless of how long you had the child to love.

if however, if she miscarried then i PERSONALLY don't think of her as being a mommy...having been pregnant yes but a mommy no.
