Sadly, it's hard to tell when a band is selling out, because there's no way to tell the true purpose of that change. When people say selling out, they usually refer to a band changing their style to a more radio-friendly sound, thus gaining a wider audience and potentially losing older ones. So, the only way a band won't be accused is if they change their style to a less radio-friendly sound, and losing certain undedicated fans in the process. But again, you don't always know whether a band is "selling out" or "experimenting"...it's just hard to tell. Actually, now that I think about it, a good way to tell if a band is selling out is with a label change. A more mainstream label often means that the band is making an effort to be more radio-friendly, as chances are it will be spread across a more mainstream audience.

I'm gonna go with Gwen Steffani as a HUGE sell out.
I can no longer stand her singing.
I loved her when she was in No Doubt...until the last 2 albums they had then I couldnt stand them.
Staind also got wishy washy which aggravated me.
Metallica has gotten worse over the years
Green Day is now HORRID. Dookie was the BEST album by them and now they get all political on us.
Most bands/musicians do it because it gets them more money, which in the end is all they care about.

Many!! Like Avril Lavigne (she became everything that she supposably hated), Gwen Stefani (whatever happened to the No Doubt Gwen I loved so much?), Mariah Carey (a respectable songstress turned DIVA!).
And you have your hard rock bands turned soft because of airplay like Metallica, Korn, Limp Bizkit, Staind....many MANY others! How sad!

I totally agree with Gwen Stefani, but for the older folks, Jefferson Airplane started out cool in the 60's, became sold-out Jefferson Starship in the 70's, and then *really* sold-out Starship in the 80's

Sugar Ray, their first album was all speed metal, skater music with the exception of Fly, then after that song took off, the rest of their albums were pretty much the same.
