I understand your frustration and passion for the failures of this on going conflict but it's not the troops fault. They are following orders to the best of their abilities and doing a fine job at it.
The buck stops at the Commander in Chief and it's important that as we debate the pros and cons of this war that we keep that in mind because those that are for the war automatically call those that are against the was unpatriotic and troop haters.
The war in Iraq will only be won politically; our military mission was accomplished when we got rid of Saddam. Our troops are trained for open combat, not urban warfare or nation building.

That's a really good question - and it pretty much sums up the reason why this war is so damned difficult and frustrating - both to our troops on the front lines and to the American people.
That isn't, however, reason enough to throw in the towel and accept a policy of defeat. We cannot accept the indiscriminate slaughter of thousands of innocent men, women and children as an acceptable tactic for ANY reason. And we cannot accept the demands of the radical Islamic terrorists.
Too bad this war has to be so political in nature. I believe that once Congress approves of military action - their job is finished, now step aside and let the generals in the field do their job. Wishful thinking, I guess.
Anyone really think the terrorists will abandon their tactics if they are successful? Now that's really wishful thinking.
Best we try and nip this demented ideology of hatred and domination now, rather than let it fester and grow.
The last time the world ignored an ideology of hatred and domination, it culminated in the deaths of 62 million people, the total estimated lives lost in WWII.
