My Darling little Katie has neon Tettra desies, she shows all of the sighs, she used to be restless in her tank (seperated from the well fish) but now my poor little fish moves around slowly and it looks like it hurts, she looks rely acward when she moves. I thought nature would end it before it got this bad but it may just be kinder not to wait. what is the best way for this to be done?

You are most likely right. Of course there is n treatment or cure and your fish will only get worse. Here's a link about the best method

Sorry to hear of your loss.

I just had to put a swordtail down (had fish TB) and it's hard but she was suffering.

What I did was put about 5 drops of clove oil in a half full water bottle (disposable one) and shook it up so the solution turned cloudy white. Then I took the fish from her tank and put her in a disposable bowl with water from her tank. I then added some of the clove oil solution to anesthetize her. Within 30 seconds she'd rolled over on her side and within a minute she was knocked out. I left her in the solution for 10 minutes to make sure she was fully anesthetized then put her into a baggie and put her in the freezer. Since she was anesthetized she didn't suffer at all. I felt awful doing it (made me cry) but when they have a severe disease and are beyond the point of help it's more humane to euthanize.

PS- It was hard to find clove oil, I finally found it at Eckerds from the pharmacist.

That sounds very very sad. It may be time to let her go. Take her out of her bowl into another bowl with no fish, and buy a certain chemical at your pet store that kills the fish. It kills them instantly with no pain. Hope this helped!!!! Poor Katie. Poor poor Katie. I am teribly sorry about that.

My sympathies for your loss. It sounds like Katie means a lot to you.

I have seen most sources recommend either clove oil (putting her in a cup with tank water and adding clove oil), freezing (putting her in a cup with tank water and putting the cup in the freezer, or decapitating (not smashing but one clean cut to remove the entire head). Any change is going to be stressful for you fish. The clove oil is probably the most humane but since nobody can really know what the perspective from the fish is, it's hard to say. In nature, she wouldn't have lasted as long as she has. You have already given her a much longer life by caring for her as well as you have.

Get 2 extra strength Alka-Seltzer and a coffee cup.
Put the fish in water in the cup, drop in the tablets, cover it with cardboard, or something until the fizzing stops.
Extra strength has pain killer in it, they don't feel anything as they suffocate in the bubbles.

Freezing is inhumane. It hurts them. Also, some fish survive freezing and die horrible deaths in the trash can.

Small fish can be hit with a hammer. You have to be super fast and get them in ziplock then smash them. This is actually the most humane if you can stand to do it.

well if this has been going on for over 10 days then i think you idea is the best option but i hate killing animals.

if you do end up doing it then these are some ideas

bleach in tank -mean-

if it is a fresh water fish add a lot of salt to the tank
or opposite
-mean-

or let nature take its course

Uhhhhh.. wow.
I would suggest just letting it go, because really? If it's already been this long what's a little longer? You'd probably feel bad if you did something to it.
I mean, that's kind of cruel to kill your pet.. even if you did it in a 'humanely' way, how can you be sure?!
Just let nature take it's course.

eventually the fish will die, if the fish actually stops swimming for a while and just floats around and then moves every so often just flush it down the toilet. its just a fish, and it is probably suffering, so just flush it and say goodbye if you dont think the poor thing can recover.
