You'll have to do some leg work. As long as you don't mind dusty books, you'll be fine. Go to county Historical Societies and found out what you can with the names you know. That's always a good place to start. They can steer you in the next direction when you've gone as far as you can go there.

Good luck!!

Ancestry.com is great, but requires a subscription if you want any good information. You may have a local genealogy library where you can find someone to help you out. It's a lot of work, because you have to find paperwork - like census or immigrant records - you can't just rely on a family tree that someone else put online that you found your great-grandmother on or something. I'm working on mine now, because I want my son to be proud of his heritage. My grandmother's helping me because she's really into genealogy. Her side of the family is traced back to the 1500s. My dad's side of the family is traced back to the 1600s. My husband's family, however, is completely untraced so I have to start from scratch there. I'm not sure if you can get census records from after 1930, so if you know the names of your grandparents and great-grandparents, that helps a lot. Good luck and happy hunting!

You can request birth/death certificates for your parents, and keep following that trail back. Birth certificates list parents names. Also try marriage license, I'm pretty sure I had to identify my parents on my marriage license. Another thought...you can go back to the "old neighborhood" where you grew up and ask the neighbors if they knew your parents or any relatives.

You can have a genetic test done to see where your ancestors are from, and where you could have possible family in your country. They cost like 150-300+ $$'s.
