i'd like to eventually get some new wheels and tires for my wife's 98 sidekick, but i don't want to get wheels that are offset in such a way that they make the tires rub. i'd like to get wider tires, like maybe 10.50" to give it a wider stance and to try to reduce the risk of a rollover.

Check with a tire store that specializes in custom wheel and tire combo's for the proper rim width for a certain tire tread width.

Take the tire off. Hang a plum bob from the inside of the fender well and one from the opposite side of the fender well. Measure between the two. Now take a straight edge and put it on the hub. Measure from the straight edge to first one plum line then to the other. Take these measurements to where your going to buy the rims from and they'll be able to get you what you need. Or you can let them do it.

HOW TO MEASURE WHEEL OFFSET… Offset is the distance between the mounting side of the center disc and the rim centerline. Positive offset is when the disc is on the outside of the centerline. Negative offset is when the disc is on the inside of the centerline.
