I need to make sure before I purchase a harddrive so I dont mess up ?

Likely yes. ATA has been rekindled under the names PATA and SATA ( parallell and Serial ATA) PATA is the same as your good ol' IDE cable. SATA however is the latest greatest and is very different.

yes.....dependent on the age of your machine you may need to upgrade the ribbon cable from 40 pin 40 conductor to 40 pin 80 conductor to insure the drive will operate at its fullest. i would advise using the higher conductor cable on your optical drives as well.
