Often times these people are trying to fulfill something missed as a child or just trying to live their lives vicariously through their kids. There are psychological reasons why, but too deep to go into here.
Forcing kids into sports or anything, if they don't want that on their own is another example.
It is too bad for the kids.
there are other reason and some just think their kids are beautiful, but the above has a lot to do with it.
I have also seen studies that indicate some, though not a lot, of these parents view their kids as somewhat sexual objects from early on. Thye do not neccessarily abuse them in that way, in fact seldom do, but sort of sell them sexually by doing these pageants. I am not saying I accept that as true because I haven't researched enough, but i have read studies that indicate that happens.
It is best just to let kids be kids. The period they are is so short and they never get to be that again.

Normally its because when they were younger they either use to do pageants themselves and lost horribly, or they always wanted to do it but were not considered *good* enough.
Of course its dramatic
I think a lot of shows especailly VH1 and MTV like to show the most dramatic parts of it.
I feel bad for most of the girls
They just want to be normal girls, play outside, get dirty, and just be a normal child.
Instead they are sucked into a life or fake tanning, fake teeth, and 1,000 dresses.
I do think that the parents can get overdramatic when it comes to these pageants. If a child doesnt do so well, they are yelled at. Which I feel horrible for those kids.
I think we need to stop making people think that beauty is what makes the person. Its not.....

I think that the best explanation for this is money. Parents like money. Their children, unfortunately, don't really care about the money; they just want to be accepted by their parents. I hope that most parents that put their children in pageants so that the kids will use the money someday.

You are right, It isn't about the kids, it is the feeding of the ego of the parents.
The kids are treated miserably to be something their parents want instead of being aloud to kids.
It also causes jealousy from other siblings or friends, it attracts pedophiles who see little kids as grown up.
I bet Jean Benet Ramsey would be alive right now if it wasn't for these "Beauty Pageants"

No matter what explanation you give it, it seems creepy to me. I don't think it's healthy or productive for the children. And I seriously can't come up with admirable reasons why a parent (usually the mother) would encourage and support it.

maybee because the adults think it will help their kids to feel beautiful and special and things like that..also the parents do it because they can win alot of money, and they just want themselves and their kids to be known..usually the parents think, or say its what the child wants to do, but usually its just them wanting to win money or be known ect. And after a while the kids (like you said) act stuck up and everything because they think they are the center of attention and "all that" and everything..

It seems to be all about the mother defining herself through her daughter. I think the whole thing is sick. You didn't even mention the sexy clothes & dance moves for a 4-yr-old!

Maybe because it was their dream as a kid and didn't get the chance to do it. So now they put their daughters through hell so they can live the experience indirectly.

Because they want their children to feel beautiful and for then to learn and have fun. Another reason they do it is probably becuase they didn't get to do that when they were younger.

To teach them that they are objects only to be admired for their beauty.
I don't agree with that but that seems to be what pageants are about.
