Sometimes refered to as Dragons Breath. When down shifting or lifting off the throttle unburned gasoline in the combustion chanbers travel out to the hot exhaust where they reignite as the fire ball out of the exhaust. Turbo charged cars emit even bigger flames as the throttle closes and the trubo is still spinning forcing out the remaining fuel onto the hot turbo and exhaust. My race car used to set the grass on fire at several tracks I was asked to run my exhaust out the rear of the car. However rules were rewritten latter. I was racing turbo charged 70's era BMW cars.

left over fuel that didn't get burned in the cylinder when the driver lets off the throttle. The high temp of the exhaust will light the fuel off and out the exhaust pipe it comes. good luck.
