Ying - literally means dark, cool, shadow/shade etc. Yang - means sun, brightness, male, warmth etc. So, as you can see, they're the opposite of each other. When they're used together, they mean the balance of 2 opposite energies, they oppose each other, and yet they compliment each other, one can not exists without the other. Look at the symbol itself, you'll see, it's part black, park white, and each is an equal part.

It is entirely about balance in life, beginning with a balance between the sexes. Male - Female.
That which is strong may be strong in some areas, but weak in others and an apparent weakness is not necessarily weak if it has a balance of other strengths.
A willow tree, for instance, embodies the principles of yin and yang very well.
The soft and very flexible willow appears much weaker than other trees, but in high wind conditions where a hardwood tree such as oak will reach the limit of its flexibility and its branches or the entire tree will break, the willow will bend, but the willow has very strong roots which continue to provide a substantial base, and, when the wind pressure that was too much for the oak finally drops, the willow will regain its poise and posture.
