Our personallities begin forming in the womb as a result of our pain, pleasure sensation. We quickly learn to do those things that result in the greatest pleasure like crying because of want. It is through this filter that we accumulate traits by what we observe. Approximately when we mature, we have learned that to recieve the most intense pleasure, we have to suffer pain for a brief period of time. This is the source of sadness in our lives.

Every thing the mind thinks, imagines, or creates through body functionality, is only because of what the brain has previously learned, or understood.
Society, with its celebrities, genres, etc, influences the mind.
Think of the brain as a sponge, what makes it different then the next sponge (or a friends mind) is that it has different instinctive, and genetic prevalence's it tends to hold onto.
A girl I know had a discussion with me at work and said "We want are children to be individualize, but we forget to tell them to be normal."

The process is also known as introjection. Identity construction is interesting as we do have a great deal of control on who we are, who are and who will we become.
Many aspects of our identity are, as you suggest, bits and pieces that we select.
The process itself does seem to arise from envy.

yes, and also part of it is from how we first reacted with what we see. you see this all must have happend the first time in our childhood. other experiences would come later in life but they do not have the same effect unless they were shocking.
