How do you calculate Death Rate, Birth Rate, Rate of natural increase and doubling time?

You need census data and buracracy. Birth and Death certificates are easy to count. Contact the Departments of Vital Statistics, they keep track of the birth and death certificates.


Birth rate is the average number of live births per year (usually calculated for a 10-20 year average).

Death rate is the average number of deaths per year (usually calculated for a 10-20 year average).

Birth rate - Death rate = Rate of natural increase (and yes, it can be a negative number).

Doubling time is the amount of time it takes for the base population to double in size (Rate of natural increase + immigrants) x number of years = the starting population figure.

kevin is nearly right, but the birth rate is the number of live births per 1000 people per year, and the death rate is likewise.

Natural increase is as Kevin says
