Personally Heavy Metal. But if it weren't for Hard Rock bands like The Jimi Hendrix Experience and Led Zeppelin there would be no Heavy Metal.

Hard Rock. Heavy Metal is a bit too odd for me.

I would have to say hard rock. First off, its more blues based than, heavy metal, so there is more of a "everyman" feel to it. And most hard rock bands actually have a great groove. Heavy metal may be faster, but hard rock makes you feel better. Take AC/DC for example, you feel a rush and sense of excitement in their songs.

Personally, it's hard for me to distinguish them, mainly because I listen to bands like Led Zeppelin, who combine hard rock and heavy metal.
Anyway, hard rock is better for me. It's simpler with good melodies and strong beats. Heavy metal sometimes makes my head hurt, but they're both good.

I personally find Heavy metal more complex and intricate, but hard rock is far easier to listen to.
