You do not necessarily have to go to the doctors for a sprained wrist.

You should go to your doctors immediately if you have of:
any swelling or deformity
pain when the wrist is resting
you can't move your wrist fully
pain with moving your fingers
numbness or weakness

"RICE:" Rest, Ice, Compress, and Elevate.

For a sprained wrist, the first 48 hours shoul be little to no activity, as it is beginning the healing. Just rest it. It's simple but so many people do not let it rest and the healing process then takes longer.

You also need in the 1st 48 hrs to ice your wrist. The usual order for icing is 20 minutes on your wrist about every 3 or 4 hrs.

If you have an ACE bandage wrap your wrist, but make sure that you did not wrap it too tight. This is a very common error. If u did wrap it tight, just unwrap and try again until you are comfortable
Also keeping it slightly elevated also helps to reduce pain and swelling.

If the wrist is in fact sprained, he'll most likely put you in a wrist brace, possibly give you a bit of pain medication and/or a cortisone shot to lessen the swelling, and send you home with instructions to ice it if it hurts. If it's broken, that means a cast, no question, as well (possibly) as the pain meds and cortisone as well.

If you're SURE it's not broken, then you can ice it; you can also go to a pharmacy and get a splint for it. The doc has the advantage in medications, not mechanics.
