Two factor can be readily identified. One is language - and if I hear one more sentence where every other word is F.U.C.K. I am going to rip someone's tongue out. Aside from the incredible amount of swearing the younger generation does, they also use words in different contexts than the older generation does. But then, the older generation did that too, when they were young, and their parents also complained about it.
The other factor is volume. Often older people are hard of hearing and either won't, don't or can't wear hearing aids successfully, so they float through life unable to hear what anyone is saying, young or old.
Aside from these two factors, the young and the old often talk about different things. In the field of music, for instance, most older people would hard pressed to name anyone on the current youth hit parade. Or sing any of the curently poopular rock songs. Nor do they always go to the same movies. So there are fewer and fewer things in common about which they can initiate a conversation or have a serious discussion.
When the links happen, they are fun, and are cherished.

Older people thinks more of life and reality based on the experience of their life and wants younger people to think like that.. Today younger people have world to explore and don't think kind of experience older one had will really be useful and matches with what all they feel based on their experience..

If older people do not try to understand younger people and becomes intolerant to the thinking of their age.. i feel the communication breaks down on that.. I always believe every human being has different feelings and reaction on each situation and time and all have logical and reasoning ability to understand that.. so its not worth for older people to push anything to younger ones and just keep and eye like a watch dog and be available to them when they feel they need you are made available when they cant ask for that..

I have 3 children and our communication has gotten better as we got older. I think the key is being nonjudgmental on both sides. Once one begins judging the other, the relationship goes down the tubes.

Every conversation needs a listener and a speaker. Failure to communicate results when there is no listener.

Lilke someone else said, each side think they know everything and fail to really listen to the other person.

There are two parts to communication: Talking and Listening. Both talk a whole bloodclot lot, but neither listen very well. No one can talk and listen at the same time. Impossible.

Because the younger people think they know it all; and the older people know, for a fact, that they know it all!
the younger generation wants to grow up fast, know everything there is to know, and gets dumber, doing so.

i think its us older ones that contribute greatly to the break...sometimes, we are so busy planning what to preach and what we should say to the young, that we forget to acknowledge what it feels like to be young and struggling to find our value sets and a way to understand what's happening around us. I'm in my 60's now, but i believe i have good communication with all the young people i know, most of whom are not family.

I think us the older generation is the break down. We get to set in our ways and forget, we were once young and misunderstood as youths as every generation before us were.

Younger people are still trying to find themselves while we are worring about how were going to manage the bills.

My daughter and I are very close. I choose to get involved in the things she does.
To sum it all up, us elders get set in our ways and just don't like change.

Just my opinion.

I think different lifestyles. The younger generation could learn so much from their elders if they would just listen.
