Because the programs they have in place help more people in need than people trying to scam it. When I was a child, my parents fell on hard times where they either couldn't get a job or they just weren't making enough money to make ends meet. These programs made it possible for my parents to get back on their feet. And it's not like they were happy about having to use food stamps...my mom was humiliated and couldn't wait to get off them.

Without welfare and programs like it, we would have a lot more homeless people than we already do. Sure, there are people that abuse the system...but if you fell on seriously hard times, you would understand what a little helping hand can mean to someone who desperately needs help. And another thing, most of the people on welfare paid their share of taxes before going on it. Think of it as a little insurance if something goes wrong. So some people need to make a claim on it while others don't. And some people use it fraudulently...but not enough to cancel out the benefits of having it.

But in this capitalistic, self serving nation...it seems many people can't muster the desire to help someone other than themself...and spend all their energy complaining about the few people that take advantage of a worthy system.

I personally don't feel I need to be supporting any one on welfare, I do think we should help widows ;orphans; and people who are genuinely disabled, but there are to many people on welfare who is more able than I, and I know some who are collecting welfare who have good jobs and make a lot more money than I do , they have been reported to the welfare, yet nothing has been done and I know for a fact they have been getting welfare for over 6 years, that is why they can drive a new Mercedes and go out to dinner several times a week while I eat beans, don't forget the gov, has no money except what it takes from us.

You assume that everyone that uses any sort of public assistance is "lazy"?

No matter what you do, there will always be those that cheat the system. Is that a good enough reason to penalize those that really need it?

Someone might infer that you are a tight @$$ed individual that thinks it is fine to give to the rich and screw the poor. Because that is what I think a conservative Republican is. . .

And that, my friend is called "generalization". THAT is what you are doing. . .

OMG, and where do you get your facts from? First of all, before asking something like this, why don't you take an economics class?

Liberals are not to blame you incredible brilliant minds. It's a whole system. We pay taxes, all of us including those lazy ones dear, when you shop, when you buy a car, etc. and to keep the economy working and growing we need to SPEND, the only thing that really happens is a form of recycling, besides who are you to say those people are lazy? You don't seem to know alot about the system.

BTW, thumbs up for those who said that it's our politicians who he's referring to. I'm outrage that our tax money is spend mostly on their luxurious trips, dinners, gifts, salaries, courtesy of US, taxpayers.

If the only thing preventing them from working is laziness, no one should provide for them.

I'm as liberal as they come.

That being said, I do not like welfare except when a physical or mental disability keeps them from holding a job or going to school.

Educating our homeless or citizens living below the povery line could produce a positive cycle because they have some tools that are valuable to employers. Then there's no need to sit at home and "mooch" off our tax dollars.

BECAUSE ITS NOT JUST LAZY PEOPLE WHO DON'T WANT TO WORK!!! There are alot of disabled people who can't and need that healthcare. Its insensitive to think otherwise. What we need revision on is how we can help people to work. For instance my friend has MS, if she has medicaid and is on her shots, she's fine she can work, but if she works they take her off medicaid and she relapses. Now darnit why not let her work and pay back into the system that is giving her healthcare! That makes a heck of alot more sense.
