What is NTLDR and how do you reinstall it?

If you're getting a message like "NTLDR missing or corrupt" then you may be in big trouble.

There is a possiblitiy that you can boot from your Windows CD, get into recovery console (or do a repair installation) and things may be ok.

Unless you did something that would mess up your ntldr, you hard drive might be going bad. Or your hard drive controller might be going bad.

So...try booting your Windows disk and try to copy ntldr back to your hard drive...or do a repair installation. If that doesn't help you may need a new drive.

If you have critical data on your computer, all is not lost, you CAN get it back from specialized disk recovery services.

Good luck!

It is the boot loader for windows. Not just a loader. Without it or another boot loader such as GNU Grub, Windows will not be able to start because there is nothing to start it.

On startup, your computer first executes the BIOS, which is a startup program built into your computer. The BIOS then starts a boot loader ( such as NTLDR or GNU Grub ) that loads the operating system. Some bootloaders such as GNU Grub allow you to select any operating system you have installed. NTLDR on the other hand can only boot Windows.

To reinstall it you will need the windows xp cd. If this is an OEM computer( i.e. you didn't install windows yourself), you should have gotten a cd with your computer. If not, then you should call your manufacturer. If they do not have it you are going to have to buy a new disk. To reinstall it, put the cd inside and turn off the computer. Then turn it on again. When it starts up, it will give you a blue screen saying reinstallation, new installation, or repair. Do not say reinstallation or new installation. Instead select repair or press 'r'. Follow the instructions it gives and answer the questions it asks. The path to windows is usually c:\Windows but may be different. You may have to type in your administrator password, if you have set one. Next you will get a line with a blinking cursor. This is called a command prompt. Whatever program name you type here, Windows will run after you press enter. Type 'fixboot' and press enter. Then restart the computer.

I hope this works. And maybe you should consider switching to a less error-prone operating system. *cough* Linux.
