I'm going to be in a Tachira- a state in which the rural areas have been known to be at risk for Malaria. I plan on being in the city, but I'm not sure if I will have to go through rural areas to get into the city. My doctor suggested either Mefloquin- taken weekly- or Doxycycline- taken daily. Both of them have not-so-agreeable side effects. I'm just curious as to what other travelers to Venezuela have chosen and how it affected them. Thanks!

Check the medicines with your doctor but I wouldn't be worried about catching Malaria..... I would be worried about Hugo Chavez!!! Things are not very stable at the moment, Malaria does not sound awful compared to Chavez and his hate towards americans.... Be careful please and don't show off that you're american.

I've been loads and never taken anything. Your doctor should know but they can be over cautious.
Check out http://www.who.int/ith/countries/ven/en/ they say risk in some rural areas of Tachira
Malerone is more expensive but you don't have to take it for as long. I was in Mozambique with some one taking it they caught Malaria but were fine after a couple of days in bed.

You should be OK..but the best way to know what you can take is going to the health department in your area.
I went to Mérida (very close to Táchira) I just used mosquito repellent everyday...I did not get anything...don't ruin your vacation by taking something it might make you feel sick.
Good luck and enjoy your trip....eat loads of yummy food..

I took Malarone daily when I went to the Philippines. That absolute least possible side effects. I went to the city health department and they gave me 3 choices, including possible side effects. Malarone was my choice.

Good Luck
