Who could (or can) make the best plays when it was critical to do so? Who was (or is) the guy who can make those amazing diving grabs when all hope seemed lost?

Tris Speaker has to be mentioned. He was known for playing center field so close to 2B that he could talk to the infielders without raising his voice because he could get to anything hit over his head. Before the HR was king people argued over whether Cobb or Ruth was the greatest ever, but not many would disagree that Speaker was third because he was so good with his glove. He died of old age 20 years before I was born so I can't say he's the best in my opinion, but I think that the opinion people held 50 years after he retired has to be given it's space.

For the modern era I have to go with Andruw Jones or Griffey. What makes them so good is they just got a read on the play BEFORE it happened.

The best arm I ever saw was Clemente. He should have a permit just to go out in public.

Currently I would have to go with Andruw Jones, but for all time I would probably go with Roberto Clemente
