Poisoning can be acute or chronic, dose relationship is greater and longer in pregnancy, infants and youth due to organ development - because the pathways to excrete mercury are not well formed.
Acute poisoning refers to situations where the effects are directly related to the ingestion of the substance as a single or multiple exposures occurring within a short time (less than 24 hours).
Chronic poisoning refers to situation where there is often an ingestion of a small quantity of the substance over a long period of time leading to toxic concentrations and thus to symptoms of poisoning.
The acute exposure in a large dose causes colic abdominal pain whereas a small dose of the same over a long period of time leads to neurotoxicity i.e. loss of memory and IQ. Mercury is also known for multiple symptoms with increasing chronic disease.
