I am a network administrator with many years of experience with computers. I would not spend any more than $1000 for a going away to college laptop. Also, save your money and don't get any extra warranty on it. Its not worth it. After three years the computer will only be worth $100.

I am a college student and I have been looking at buying an hp dv2000t:

Dell has payment plans that let you pay ~$50 a month or something reasonable. Unless you arent exagerating when you say NO MONEY - in that case

turn to a life of crime. D:

I linked to a really nice Dell one... If he says he needs a better laptop, he is lying. Its way more than enough for your basic school work and internet browsing.

go to www.hotdealsclub.com, it is not a sales site. it's a bargin site where people report great web deals. they have some good deals on it. look under the friday june 1st area. there is one there. they have new listings all the time. also have him check with the scool, if a laptop is mandatory at the school, they usually have a program to purchase one from the school or a school related seller

Check out craigslist or see if there are any freecycling groups in your area. It may be hard to find a listing for a free laptop, but you could place an ad that you're looking for free or low cost laptop.

Ebay.
Just make sure the person you bid from has 100% positive feedback.
I buy all kinds of things from Ebay for far less than I would pay in the store.

if you really have no money.. sign him up with the most expensive school you can. i'm going to ai and having to pay on my own, if my parents made less the goverment would pick up the tab... anyways schools have websites you order stuff like that on that is loan inclusive. my friend is a dependant and she gets her school for free, they added a student loan for a laptop on her bill... gov. picked that up too.

Go check prices online using amazon. You'll find them for significantly less. If they are still too high, you can search ebay. However, the laptops on ebay are usually used
