There are a few areas of the country where there are rent controls in place but for most of the country there is no limit to what a property owner can charge. Your only remedy is to shop around and possibly move.
Many apartment complexes automatically raise rents when your lease comes due just because they know you do want to go through the hassle of moving.

Assuming that you don't have a lease, or that you do have a lease that allows for rent increases, yes it's legal. The exception would be in a rent-controlled apartment but those are not common in most jurisdictions.
Your only real option is to move or try to negotiate the rent with the landlord.

If U r living in the US, "YES" anything the landlord does is "legal & binding" ,,,if U had allowed it by not , reading through the lease agreement properly & understanding it clearly to ormit or delete what U do not agree from the START. American BUSINESS PEOPLE ARE DICTATORS!!
U have ur rights too if U do not agree to the TERMS & CONDITIONS written so U are free to go look for 1 that will suit ur needs & finances. The US is "lawless" when it comes to $$$$ & biznes they own. U as the consumer is left in the mercy of these unscroupulous people namely bankers & property owners because they are in CAHOOTS .
As I have pointed this in my question posed, how many americans really understand that they will never own a property as long as they have just "failed to pay 1 year of property tax?? It will be taken away from U & in the way the FORCLOSURE IS SERVED ON U,,,,,& where does it leave U,,,HOMELESS OF COURSE!! So unless U have millions stashed aside to ensure U have enough funds for the property tax,,,U will be homeless soon as U have the first property tax to pay by end of the year after your retirement. can ur social security of $2,000 per month see U through this & other bills & taxes each ending year??
So try to find a place, if U are fortunate enough, where the landlord is kind & easy going & is less $$$$ minded. Just remember U will not find that many at all kind people in the US who owns property & manage it as a business,,,,U jsut have to pay at their whims & fancy. It is LAWLESS so U just pay what is demanded of them & it is so sickening they can increase the rental not just at a rate of 10% bi-annually & but the sick 20% annually is mad!!

Yes, its legal if its tied to an index. Meaning that your rent will vary depending on the current cost of living. It looks like the cost of living in your area has gone up in the last year. You should read over your rental contract to make sure, or you can talk to an attorney if you still dont understand the "fine print."

Totally legal. Buy a home and/or...better yet, buy a rental property.
Check for rent control but chances are...the landlord has that covered.

Your landlord/property owner is allowed to adjust the lease amounts on their property. If you sign onto an annual lease, you are stuck to pay any rates that the landlord/property owner sets.
Best bet, check out your lease, to see if there are terms in it describing potential increases.

Don't have a lease? Then it's almost certainly legal except perhaps in a few municipalities.

inless theres rent control, most other places dont need a reason to raise rent. with a lease, at least your good for a year.....better???

As long as your city doesn't have rental increase cap, your greedy landord can increase. You should try foming a group of renters and get signature to petition for a rental cap. Where do you live?
