The Ender series, by Orson Scott Card (Ender's Game is the first) is my favorite of any genre.

Dune and the other six books by Frank Herbert (and continued by his son) are very good, if a bit heavy.

For funnier science fiction, try the Discworld novels by Terry Pratchett or the first four books in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series by Douglas Adams (HGTTG, The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, Life the Universe and Everything, and So Long and Thanks for All the Fish). After that they get a little uninspired. If you have the chance, also check out the original radio scripts.

If you want more fantasy than sci fi, there's always the Lord of the Rings trilogy by JRR Tolkien, and Ursula LeGuin's Earthsea series. Like dragons? Try Anne McCaffrey's Dragonriders of Pern.

Asimov IS science fiction.. so, my vote is the Foundation series by Isaac Asimov.. the Robot series is really good as well, but I prefer Foundation..

Adam's Hitchikers Guide series.. but if you read the books, you have to watch the movie, the BBC version AND the more recent one, AND listen to the radio show that the books were based on..

Just start reading almost anything you can by Isaac Asimov. He did do a series, but I can't recall the name of it. It's all good reading.
