A driver is some code that tells your computer how to run a specific device that's connected to it. Many drivers are built in like keyboard, monitor, mouse... When you connect something new, often the computer will look for a driver in it's internal library so it can use the new device like a new printer, digital camera or scanner. At times you may need to run a program so the latest driver is loaded for you from a CD and the device made ready to use. It's like an instruction manual for your computer.

A driver is "software" that allows your operating system to interact/communicate with hardware devices that are attached to your system. Even a software application can use "drivers" to help it work with your OS and computer devices. Of course this is a simple definition. But that's all a driver is. It's a file or group of files that help software applications utilize your computers hardware.

Drivers are the middle-men of the software/hardware relationship. They are small parts of software that allow larger components (such as Windows) to talk to specific hardware components like your video card, hard drive, network, etc. There are different drivers for each model component written to allow the software to most efficiently use the hardware.

Drivers allow the operating system (Windows) to communicate with your hardware (ex. Digital Camera, Scanner, Printer). When you purchase your hardware, it should come with a CD that installs the drivers for you.
