My laptop has been taking a VERY long time to load and start up to the desktop, and then it takes very lonf to open applications like Word. However, it seems to speed up coniderably after an hour. Should I do a disk defrag and how long will it take? And what about a disk cleanup? Any other suggestions? My hard disk is about 80 HDD/512 MB DDR2.

I have never done the defrag before, so I expect it will take a lot of time using the windows xp defrag thing?

You should always do a disk cleanup BEFORE defragmenting. The more free space on your disk, the faster and easier your defragmentation will go.
Prior to defragmenting, remove all temporary files, clear your browser cache, delete old log files and any other unneeded junk on your hard drive. Empty your trash. There is no point in defragmenting junk files!
I recommend CCleaner http://www.ccleaner.com/ . It's free and does a great job of removing junk from your disk. WinXP's disk cleanup wastes a LOT of time thinking about compressing your older files. CCleaner is much more configurable and will only get rid of stuff you tell it to. It's also great for cleaning old junk out of your Registry, another source of slowness.

Defragmenting in Vista takes ages AND there is no progress bar as there is in XP so you are left wondering if anything is actually happening. I left Vista defragging before going to bed at 1 AM and it was still at it when I woke up at 7 AM. Never used it again. I downloaded and installed a third party disc defragmentation tool

Disk defrag takes a little while, 2hrs give or take. If you haven't done it in awhile obviously it'll take longer. If you do do it, I recommend disk clean up first because if it's deleted you don't have to defrag it! You may want to get spyware scanner/removal software. Search for spyware, there are free ones out there some obviously work better than others.

2hours????? I doubt it
it depends on your hard drive space, did you do it before, and what program you use.
a 80 gb drive, never defrag before for a year.....3-4 hours using the built one.
try O&O Defrag, or IObit SmartDefrag (free)
just so you know, if you have never done it before, do it at night and leave it on, it WILL TAKE A LONG TIME TRUST ME.
check your drive first using the program you use, if the frag is less than 5%, you don't need to do it. check your startup items instead.
good luck!

could take almost 2 hours if you have never defragged before. When optimized it will take about 10-15 minutes
