I'm American. I thought it was great
A LOT Americans don't watch hockey, and at least 90% of those who do probably don't know who Don Cherry is.
Don Cherry bleeds hockey, and even if you don't agree with what he says, he's a straight shooter. When Brett Hull was blabbing about Daniel Alfredsson's "controversial" goal in game 3, Cherry was quick to remind him about his controversial goal in the Cup Finals in 1999.
Bottom line: straight shooter, calls 'em as he sees him. Might not be a touchy feely guy, but he's been there and done it all before.
PS: get rid of the instigator rule. Can't argue with that.

That might have been the most embarrassing bit of broadcasting I have seen in a long time. It was a gong show of a car wreck and a poorly conceived strategy to capture a US audience.
Canadians have had the benefit of watching Grapes for YEARS and are 1) used to his rants, 2) know to take him with a grain of salt and 3) make allowances for his borderline biggoted comments.
Regardless, Cherry is a sideshow that makes Cosell look PC and his efforts did/will not help the sport in the US. If the league or networks wanted to bring in an opinionated guy with hockey knowledge and any sense for relevance, they'd be hounding Barry Melrose out of his ESPN contract.

I thot Don Cherry was funny in a don't-make-fun-of-the-old-fart-because-he's-got-dementia kind of way. I've seen him before though because some of us "hockey dumb" Americans actually DO watch the games. Even though Don Cherry says some really ridiculous things about Euro players, he does like Selanne. That makes him okay in my book. And as far as his clothing goes, have you guys taken a look at the "clowns" from the NBA or NFL? Also, Cherry doesn't look any worse of a "clown" than Melrose looks like a $5 pimp.

I thought that he needed to use a fresh routine that had a little more bearing on the game. I'm sorry, but He addresses fighting all the time, and it hasn't been an issue in this series. However, there are a lot of other things he could talk about- like the actual game. Anylizing the teams and their relative skill levels- breaking them down by their strengths and weaknesses. I've seen him do it, It would have been a much better introduction.

I saw a clip of it on my Canadian Satellite. I thought it was great. Hockey is a great sport and some of the US announcers are very boring compared to over here-some in the US are better then over here too, but regardless, Don Cherry livens things up a bit and the US could use a few of him in the booth.

Don't care for the guy.
Him putting NBC, Americans against fighting, and Brett Hull in their place was quite amusing though.
Sometimes I think that if he was on air in America more, Americans would be attracted to his controversial remarks---even critics would watch him in order to criticize him.
On the otherhand, maybe he'd be too anti-American in America's eyes to stay on air.
If he would regularly get good ratings in the States, it's hard to decide what's more important: hockey getting more attention or hockey getting more attention through the brash remarks of someone who comes across as quite the biggot and xenophobe.

I thought he was rather 'toned' down compared to what he is like on HNIC.
But I liked the way he was not afraid to tell NBC what they need to do.
Boy, I sure thought Brett Hull was kissing up to Cherry! It was fun to watch.

I thought he gave honest inisght into the game. He kinda reminded me of Charles Barkley on TNT, not afraid to criticize anybody or speak his mind. I thought it was refreshing to hear on network tv his views on fighting since everybody feels that way but are too afraid to say anything to the powers that be.
