Source needed. Many stores around here in Indiana require the under-age cashier to call over an of-age employee to scan the product. Is this the case everywhere?

Minors can sell alcohol that is sealed (i.e. a case of beer) to a customer of drinking age. Waiters/waitresses/bartenders have to be at least 18 to serve patrons a drink at an establishment in most states. That is why a lot of teenagers can get jobs as a cashier in a grocery store but very seldomly as a server at a place that serves alcohol.

In indiana, its illegal for YOUTHS (minors) purchase alcohol. however, when they work for a grocery store as a cashier or bagboy, they are allowed to SELL the alcohol.

Why stores do what they do? dont know, but I worked a grocery store when i was a minor, and i scanned alcohol all the time for customers; it'd be stupid on the stores part ot keep an underage cashier if the laws aid they couldn't sell it to people.

This is for grocery stores (or convenience stores) only.

For restaurants (that serve open cocktails, wine in glasses etc), many states require that you are minimum of 18 years of age.

Yes, I think its' illegal in every state. When I was only 17 and worked as a waiter in a dining room of a swanky retirement home that offered wine, we weren't even supposed to pour the stuff when people asked for it as we weren't old enough but that didn't stop the bosses from telling us to anyway. It didn't matter to me anyway, I was there to work, not to get drunk.
