Try out for local productions - there are plenty of small theatre groups operating in cities and towns across the country. You can also look for and attend open casting calls for movies and TV shows that may be shooting near you - they often look for small parts and background players (such as waiters or waitresses and customers in a restaurant scene). Start small and work your way up - but always be on the lookout for new parts to play. Keep trying out for stuff, even if you're not getting parts. You might also want to consider acting lessons - not just to help you get better, but also to network with other people like you who might know of something coming up that you'd like to attend or try out for.

EXPERIENCE is the key, you should look in your local paper for auditions. You will have to go on plenty of auditions.
Also look into to colleges with good theater programs, it really is key to have an education in this field. You will meet many people who will help you out in the long run
You may also want to look for an agent, but be on your guard, many are just looking for your money. Make sure that you look for a reputable agency.
