Improve your diet by reducing saturated fats and dietary cholesterol. Substitute fish for meat, eat high-fiber foods (grains, vegetables, and fruits), and use monounsaturated oils (olive or canola) in place of butter.

Dietary cholesterol can raise blood cholesterol levels. But it's the saturated fat in foods that affects cholesterol levels even more. Even if a food label boasts No Cholesterol, don't just assume the product is healthy. Check carefully for its saturated fat content. Follow a program of regular exercise to help raise your HDL level.

Supplement Recommendations -
Vitamin E: 400 IU twice a day. Check with your doctor if taking anticoagulant drugs.

Vitamin C : 1,000 mg twice a day.Reduce dose if diarrhea develops.

Garlic: 400-600 mg a day. Each pill should provide 4,000 mcg allicin potential.

Inositol Hexaniacinate : 500 mg 3 times a day. Safest form of niacin to use; does not cause flushing and may be less harmful to the liver than other forms.

Gugulipid : 25 mg guggulsterones 3 times a day. Guggulsterones are the active ingredient in gugulipid.

Psyllium : 1 tbsp. powder dissolved in water or juice twice a day. May have a laxative effect. Drink lots of extra water.

I have used and recommended flax seed oil with excellent results. I take two capsules a day-one in the morning and one at dinner and my cholesterol went down 50 points in six months without altering my diet. My whole family has bad cholesterol problems-our body manufactures it. I don't want to take medication that will damage my kidneys-like my mom and dad and a few others.

Remember that the cholesterol is produced by the liver.
Fat is fat no matter if it is from fish or not. Some fat are said to be better than other sort of fat, but I doubt that as the cholesterol is produced by the liver. Exercise is good to lower the cholesterol level, that's for sure. If you make too heavy exercises you burn just sugar, not fat. Medium exercises lower the cholesterol level and of course stay away from Mcdonalds et cetera.

Consuming more soluable fiber helps reduce blood lipids. These include apple pectin & oat bran, often available in pill form or just eat an apple & bowl of oatmeal daily.

After you've corrected your diet and if LDL is still too high, try a product by NOW Foods containing Red Yeast Rice, CoQ10 & herbs to help the liver. We know cholesterol is manufactured in the liver. Pharmaceuticals to lower cholesterol often affect the liver in a negative way. Naturopathic way is to cleanse & heal the organ so it will function normally again.

If LDL is less than 130 you are in good shape even if total cholesterol seems high - over 200.

My husband uses a supplement called Sytrinol. Go to Lifeextension.org and do a search for it. There have been numerous studies on it and it has been clinically proven to lower cholesterol....

Also, stay away from ALL trans fats...and eat lots of salmon and almonds and any food that have a lot of Omega 3 fatty acids.

Stay away from red meat and don't smoke. You may also consider raising your good cholesterol because there have been studies that have shown that this may be more important than lowering your bad cholesterol..

Garlic also helps and so does Coenzyme Q10. Also get 30 minutes of exercise a day...walking, housework, whatever....

After my husband did all of these things, his triglycerides went from 730 to 225 in about five weeks!! I don't remember what his HDL and LDL was...sorry.

Get the book Prescription for Nutritional Healing....there is a wonderful section on it!

Lifeextension.org also offers lots of tips as well.....no, I don't work for them, but I am a member....

I am a health freek, what can I say?

Good luck

I believe in eating more fish rather than meat. Fish has less natural cholesterol levels. Shelf fish, though, does contain more cholesterol. So, more fresh, baked, and broiled fish will be better choice for you.

Also, soy products, like Edamame (boiled soy beans) or Tofu, are good for you.

In the fruit category, I suggest you try pomegranate. My God parents drink the juice (100% one, I think) every day and see their cholesterol levels go down even in a few weeks.

Try!

I use flax seed oil. My body produces it's own cholesterol. Doctors want to put me on medication-no way. 6 months of 1 capsule of flax seed oil at each meal brought my numbers down to a safe level.
