I think that teaching abstinence is irresponsible and grossly unfair to kids. Whether we like it or not, they are going to have sex. They need to be informed of the risks and consequences, as well as how to adequately protect themselves if they choose to become sexually active. I doubt that not teaching abstinence equals throwing condoms at high school students. There is already a disaster in the extrememly high teenage pregnancy rate, which leads to a host of other problems that I won't go into here. However, I will point out that if kids were properly educated about safe sex rather than taught that sex is wrong, we might have a lot less babies raising babies. I don't have a problem with abstinence being taught as part of the sexual education curriculum, as long as that is not the only message they are getting.

There's brand new research, within the last month or so, which was actually sponsored by a faith-based group, suggesting that teaching abstinence in school is no more effective at stopping high schoolers from having sex than 'handing out condoms'.
Just goes to show you that kids will have sex no matter what is taught in schools. Perhaps the best place to be teaching morals is at home!

An abstinence-only program didn't stop a suburban high school nearby from having 70 pregnant students in one year.

Do you realize that EVERY study about the teaching of abstinence shows it does not work. We are wasting $2,000,000,000 a year putting on classes that don't work. I agree that there should be some sort of classes but how about safe sex or something that might work.

Abstinence only methods have shown no effect in decreasing teen pregnancy. We should be teaching children about sexuality from a variety of perspectives as any good sexual health class would do.

i think her trying to do this makes sense.
since you didn't cite a source, i'm also going to assume that what she is trying to do is to stop teaching abstinence as the ONLY method of birth control.
so much for your moral high ground...
